1. Connecting Marketing to Business Growth
You lead global marketing across brand, communications, demand, and customer and partner engagement. How do you ensure marketing is directly connected to business growth?
A:
Marketing’s role is to connect what’s happening in the market to decisions a company makes.
We sit at the intersection of customers, partners, sales, product and services teams, employees, and leadership. Our responsibility is to listen to those signals, make sense of them, and help the business act with clarity and confidence.
I’m not interested in creating noise in the market. I’m interested in helping customers understand where we create value and ensuring our teams are aligned around the value. When marketing is doing its job well, it brings consistency to the customer experience, strengthens execution across regions, and helps the business focus on what matters most.
Right now, that means helping position Hitachi Vantara as the trusted AI-powered, mission-critical data platform. Companies are moving quickly and need reliability, resilience, and trust. Marketing helps connect those customer needs to business growth by turning insights into action.
2. Building a Brand in a Crowded Technology Market
Enterprise technology has become increasingly competitive and complex. What does it take to build a brand that earns attention, trust and preference?
A:
Attention can be difficult to earn in technology, but trust is even harder.
Customers have relied on the technology and expertise behind Hitachi Vantara for decades to support mission-critical environments. As AI shapes the market, our opportunity is to help customers understand what that legacy means in a new era.
That starts with clarity. We simplify complexity and connect our technology to real business outcomes. We help customers understand they don’t have to choose between innovation and reliability.
The brands that stand out aren’t necessarily the loudest. They’re the most consistent. They tell a clear story, back it up with proof, and deliver experiences that reinforce that story over time. That’s how preference is earned.
3. When Data Becomes a Marketing Advantage
With access to richer markets, customers, and competitive insights, how is AI changing marketing's ability to move beyond reporting what happened to anticipating where the market is heading?
A:
Marketing has always been both a listening function and a communication function. We gather signals from customers, partners, analysts, sales, employees, and the market overall. Historically, connecting those signals took time.
AI is helping us close that gap much faster. Instead of spending weeks identifying patterns, we can connect insights more quickly and make better-informed decisions. That allows marketing to move beyond reporting what happened and become a strategic partner helping the business understand what’s coming next.
For me, automation isn’t the biggest advantage. It’s decision speed.
4. Balancing Brand With the AI Rush
As AI becomes embedded across marketing, audiences are also becoming more skeptical of AI-driven claims. How do you move quickly on AI while protecting the trust a brand has spent years earning?
A:
The pressure to move quickly with AI is real, but we're just as focused on delivering quality. If we don't, we start sounding like everyone else and become part of the noise. That's exactly when you lose the differentiation and credibility you've spent years building.
Governance matters. As more people across the business experiment with AI, we need to make sure we're not losing our brand voice, standards or credibility. At Hitachi Vantara, we're putting governance around how AI is used so there is clarity around what goes into the market and what represents our brand. There must always be a human in the loop to bring judgment, empathy and context. Those are essential when communicating with the market, and they are qualities AI can’t replace.
5. When Everyone Is Publishing, Who Gets Heard?
AI is accelerating content creation and changing how audiences discover information. What separates thought leadership that shapes market conversations from content that simply adds to the noise?
A:
The strongest thought leadership elevates the conversation beyond products and features to the business problems our customers are trying to solve. It combines a real point of view with real evidence, customer outcomes, and real-world examples. We focus on maintaining a consistent narrative and backing it with customer stories, references and third-party validation. That is what builds trust and gives people a reason to engage.
6. One Hitachi, One Story
Hitachi Vantara is part of the broader Hitachi Group, whose businesses span industries from energy and mobility to digital and industrial technologies. How do you balance building a distinct Hitachi Vantara brand with telling a broader “One Hitachi” story to customers and the market?
A:
The most important thread within the “One Hitachi” story is the intersection of IT and OT across industries. Hitachi Vantara provides the data foundation that helps AI operate in mission-critical environments across energy, mobility, data centers, manufacturing, and more. From a marketing perspective, our job is to help people understand how a long-standing company legacy of reliability translates into the AI era.
We have credibility because many of the mission-critical areas we support affect society and people's everyday lives. The Hitachi Vantara story is about the trusted data foundation. The “One Hitachi” story is about everything that foundation enables across those industries.
7. The Experience Behind the Brand
Your remit spans both customer engagement and employee communications. How important is internal culture to building an authentic and trusted external brand?
A:
Marketing is instrumental in shaping culture within a company, and employees are one of your most important audiences. You can’t build a trusted external brand without that internal work happening alongside it. If employees don't understand or believe in what the company stands for, that gap will eventually show up in the customer experience. The same clarity and consistency we bring to the market must exist inside the organization. Strong brands are built from the inside out.
8. The Next Marketing Advantage
As AI reshapes customer journeys, content, demand generation, and measurement, where do you see the biggest opportunity for marketing leaders to create competitive advantage over the next three to five years?
A:
Reducing AI to content generation dramatically understates its potential. The bigger opportunity is transforming how marketing operates. We're looking closely at how AI can help us move faster, remove unproductive friction from workflows, increase decision speed, and scale lead generation without sacrificing quality. Recently, we held an AI hackathon that surfaced real proofs of concept we're testing right now across campaigns, lead generation, and customer and partner insights.
Beyond operational improvements, the next competitive advantage will come from how well companies show up in AI-driven discovery. Organizations need content that answers real buyer questions, demonstrates expertise, and builds trust. The brands that win will be the brands that are most credible, useful, and trusted by both people and AI systems.
