Merck & Co. has partnered with Google Cloud to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its global operations, marking a shift toward scaled AI deployment in the pharmaceutical sector.

The multi-year collaboration involves an investment of up to $1 billion, with a focus on building AI capabilities across research and development, manufacturing, regulatory processes, and commercial functions.

As part of the agreement, Google Cloud will provide infrastructure, engineering support, and access to its Gemini Enterprise platform. Teams from both organisations will work closely to integrate AI into core workflows, moving beyond pilot programs toward enterprise-wide implementation.

The partnership is aimed at accelerating drug discovery and improving operational efficiency. Early use cases have already demonstrated gains in areas such as clinical documentation and regulatory reporting, where AI has helped reduce timelines and associated costs.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in the pharmaceutical industry, where companies are embedding AI directly into critical processes rather than treating it as a standalone capability. By integrating AI into data-heavy functions such as research and manufacturing, organisations are looking to shorten development cycles and improve precision in decision-making.

For Google Cloud, the deal reinforces its positioning in enterprise AI, particularly in regulated industries such as healthcare. The collaboration also highlights the growing role of “agentic AI” systems that can operate across workflows, combining data, automation, and domain expertise.

The move signals a transition from experimentation to scaled AI adoption in pharma, where technology is increasingly becoming central to how new treatments are developed and delivered.
