Google Maps is adding AI-generated captions for photos and videos shared by users, marking another step in Google’s push to integrate generative AI into its core products.

The feature uses Google’s Gemini models to analyze uploaded images and automatically suggest captions, giving users a starting point when contributing content. Users retain control over the final output and can edit or remove the suggested text before publishing.

The update is designed to reduce friction in content creation, particularly for contributors who upload photos but often skip adding descriptions. By automating captions, Google aims to improve the volume and quality of contextual information available on the platform.

Currently, the feature is available in English for iOS users in the United States, with plans to expand to Android devices and additional regions in the coming months.

The rollout is part of a broader set of updates focused on user contributions, including faster media uploads and enhanced visibility for Local Guides. These changes reflect Google’s strategy to strengthen its crowdsourced data ecosystem, which underpins the accuracy and relevance of Maps.

From an AI and martech perspective, the move highlights how generative AI is being embedded into everyday consumer workflows to drive engagement and scale content creation. For platforms like Google Maps, richer user-generated content can directly influence discovery, local search visibility, and business engagement.
