Michael Wilson has taken on the role of Director, Marketing & Places Procurement, North America, at Nike, expanding his leadership responsibilities across procurement for the region.

Michael brings more than 14 years of experience in the sporting goods industry, with a background in strategic sourcing and procurement. His experience at Nike includes global procurement and real estate and facilities management services, areas that support the company's broader operational and workplace requirements.

The new position brings marketing and places procurement together within a regional leadership remit, connecting sourcing decisions with the needs of brand, business and workplace operations.

Bringing strategic sourcing and operational experience together

Procurement plays an important role in helping large organisations manage supplier relationships, allocate resources and deliver business priorities. In a global brand such as Nike, these responsibilities can span marketing-related expenditure, workplace environments and the services needed to support teams across different locations.

Michael's background in strategic sourcing and procurement provides a foundation for this expanded remit. His experience also includes work recognised by Nike through its Procurement Value Award for innovation and continuous improvement in 2013.

As organisations look to balance investment, operational efficiency and business performance, procurement leaders are increasingly expected to combine commercial discipline with an understanding of the needs of the teams they support.

Procurement's role in supporting the Nike business

Nike operates across a global ecosystem of sports, products, retail and brand experiences. Supporting that business requires coordination across a wide range of functions, including the sourcing of services and resources that help teams operate effectively.

Marketing procurement can support the delivery of brand and marketing activities, while places procurement can encompass the environments and services that enable employees and business operations. Bringing these areas into a regional leadership role creates an opportunity to align sourcing decisions with local business needs and broader organisational priorities.

Michael's appointment highlights the contribution of procurement leadership beyond cost management alone, including supplier collaboration, continuous improvement and the effective use of resources.

Looking ahead

In his new role, Michael will lead Marketing & Places Procurement for North America at Nike. His experience across strategic sourcing and procurement positions him to support the company's regional priorities while working across functions that contribute to its operations and brand activities.

The appointment marks a further step in Michael's procurement career and underscores the strategic role procurement can play in supporting complex, consumer-facing businesses.
