Gen Z Travel Is About Transformation, but Marketers Still Have to Make the Math Work

A perspective by Patricia (Dubbe) Kendall, Principal Value Consultant, Iterable, exploring how Gen Z is changing the way travel brands need to think about experiences, personalization, value and loyalty.

The Expert Perspective

A recent EMARKETER report on Gen Z travel hits on a subtle shift with massive implications: travel is no longer about where you went, but who you became while you were there.

The demand is clearly there. Research shows that 93% of Gen Z respondents planned or intended to take a summer trip in 2026, with spending up 8.5% year-over-year through June.

But they aren't working with unlimited funds. When budgets are tight, consumers don't stop spending on what they value—they just get hyper-selective.

That forces travel brands to answer a much tougher question. It's no longer "How do we get them to book this room?" but "Why is this experience worth sacrificing something else for?"

Most travel marketing is still selling the wrong thing:

    • Room specs and basic amenities
    • Flight schedules and itineraries
    • Static destinations
    • Loyalty points

Meanwhile, Gen Z is asking entirely different questions:

    • Will this give me a story worth telling?
    • Will I do something I’ve never done before?
    • Will I come back feeling different?
    • Will I remember this trip five years from now?

EMARKETER highlights a compelling Razorfish framework tracking the evolution of travel: "I went" → "I felt" → "I changed."

That shift toward transformation requires a fundamental rethink of personalization. Real personalization isn't recommending three hotels based on past booking history. It’s understanding the specific "job" the traveler is hiring for the trip, whether that’s adventure, connection, rest, status, or a complete reset.

It also redefines loyalty. Repeat bookings from Gen Z don't guarantee long-term devotion. They constantly re-evaluate options across reviews, creator channels, social feeds, AI recommendations, and pricing. Brands don’t get to rest on past loyalty; they have to earn every single booking.

When marketers successfully bridge emotional transformation with the practical math of what someone is willing to spend, they won't need another generic promo campaign—they'll have a value proposition that sells itself.
