Microsoft introduces voluntary exit offer for eligible employees across four countries

Microsoft has introduced a Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) that could cover around 60,000 employees across India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. The programme gives eligible employees the option to leave the company with financial support and career planning resources.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer, announced the initiative in a company blog post on October 26, 2026. Microsoft says the offer is intended to provide employees considering opportunities outside the company with another way to make that transition, while helping participating organisations respond to changing workforce requirements.

The reported figure of 60,000 refers to employees eligible for the offer, not the number expected to leave. Participation is voluntary, and the programme does not apply uniformly across Microsoft's workforce.

Who is eligible for the programme?

The offer is available to eligible employees at internal job level 70 and below in participating organisations across the four countries. Eligibility depends on business priorities, customer commitments and workforce requirements, meaning not every employee within the specified job levels will qualify.

Microsoft has said eligible employees will receive an email with details of their individual offer. The programme is time-limited and includes financial support and career planning resources. The company has not announced how many employees are expected to accept the offer.

For employees in India, the programme is particularly relevant given Microsoft's established engineering, technology and business operations in the country. However, the number of Indian employees who qualify has not been publicly confirmed.

A different approach to workforce change

Coleman described the initiative as a new choice for employees considering a future outside Microsoft. The programme builds on the company's earlier Voluntary Retirement Programme, which offered another route for eligible employees to leave.

According to Microsoft, the new offer gives participating business units greater flexibility in adapting their workforce while allowing eligible employees to consider their next career step with support.

The approach differs from compulsory layoffs because employees decide whether to accept the offer. Its eventual impact will depend on participation levels and the workforce requirements of individual business units.

Workforce decisions amid growing AI investment

The announcement comes as Microsoft continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure and expand its AI-related products and services. The company is navigating changing business priorities while continuing to develop its cloud and AI capabilities.

Although the voluntary exit announcement does not explicitly identify AI investment as the reason for the programme, it highlights how large technology companies are reassessing workforce structures and giving business units additional flexibility as their operational needs evolve.

For Microsoft, the outcome will depend on how the offer aligns with individual teams' needs, customer commitments and longer-term workforce planning.

The company has also said it will continue helping employees develop new skills and explore opportunities within Microsoft where appropriate. Coleman described the Voluntary Exit Offer as a new initiative that the company intends to learn from as it evaluates its approach to workforce change.
