Microsoft has appointed Nick Walton as Managing Director of New Zealand, bringing an experienced technology and transformation leader into the company's local leadership team at a time when AI is creating new opportunities across the country's economy.

In his new role, Nick will help lead Microsoft's New Zealand business and work with customers, partners and the broader technology ecosystem to support the adoption of data and AI.

Sharing the move on LinkedIn, Nick described the opportunity as particularly significant as AI continues opening new social and economic possibilities for Aotearoa.

Leading Microsoft's Next Chapter in New Zealand

Nick's mandate comes as organizations across New Zealand look to move from experimentation with AI toward practical applications that can improve productivity, address business challenges and create new sources of value.

He highlighted the opportunity to help Kiwi organizations turn their existing culture of innovation and ambition into measurable impact through data and AI, while maintaining a strong focus on trust, safety and security.

As Managing Director, Nick will work alongside Microsoft's local leadership team and ecosystem of customers and partners to help organizations navigate this next phase of technology adoption.

Bringing Data and AI Transformation Experience

Before joining Microsoft, Nick spent the last several years building Slalom's New Zealand business and working closely with customers on data and AI transformation initiatives.

That experience has given him direct exposure to the challenges organizations face when moving from technology strategy to execution.

Nick noted that his time at Slalom reinforced the potential that emerges when ambition, strategy and execution come together, experience he will now bring to his role at Microsoft.

A Focus on AI-Driven Opportunity

AI adoption is increasingly moving beyond individual use cases as organizations explore how the technology can reshape productivity, customer experiences, decision-making and operating models.

For New Zealand, Nick sees an opportunity to combine the country's entrepreneurial and innovative mindset with the capabilities of AI and data to create practical outcomes across industries.

The challenge will be balancing that opportunity with the foundations required for responsible adoption, including security, trust and a strong local technology ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

As a proud New Zealander, Nick said he is looking forward to contributing to Microsoft's next chapter in the country and working with customers and partners to translate the possibilities of AI into real-world outcomes.

His appointment also marks the beginning of a new chapter following his time at Slalom, where he expressed gratitude to colleagues for their support and for what the team built together.

With AI adoption accelerating globally, Nick's combination of local leadership experience and expertise in data and AI transformation positions him to help Microsoft deepen its engagement with New Zealand's business and technology community.
