Nutanix Launches MCP Server to Enable Secure Agentic AI for Hybrid Cloud Operations

Article content
Nutanix has announced the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP), giving enterprises a new way to use AI agents and developer tools to automate cloud operations while maintaining visibility, governance, and control.
The open-source MCP server implements the Model Context Protocol specification and connects AI agents and developer tools with NCP through the Nutanix Prism v4 API.
The launch comes as enterprises look to move beyond AI assistants that simply provide information toward agentic systems capable of taking actions across complex infrastructure environments.
Bringing Agentic AI to Cloud Operations
Managing modern hybrid and multicloud environments often requires specialized technical expertise and tightly controlled access to infrastructure.
Nutanix's new MCP server is designed to provide a secure layer between AI tools and the Nutanix Cloud Platform. AI assistants such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor can use the MCP server to translate natural-language requests into specific infrastructure actions through the Prism v4 API.
This enables IT teams to use AI for tasks such as analyzing system health, surfacing diagnostics, staging automation workflows, and managing routine infrastructure operations.
Rather than giving AI unrestricted access to production systems, the MCP architecture allows existing security and access policies to remain part of the execution process.
Security and Governance at the API Layer
A key element of the MCP server is its integration with the Nutanix Prism v4 API Gateway, which handles execution, governance, and security controls.
This allows connected AI tools to operate within the same governance framework used for traditional infrastructure operations.
The architecture supports several enterprise controls, including:
- Fine-grained role-based access control: AI agents can be restricted to specific APIs and actions for which they have explicit authorization.
- Throttling and metering: Traffic controls help manage automated workloads and track API usage.
- Comprehensive auditing: System logs provide visibility into which AI agent initiated specific commands.
- Asynchronous task management: Long-running operations can be handled as asynchronous tasks, allowing agents to monitor execution and status.
Nutanix also supports human-in-the-loop oversight, giving IT operators the ability to maintain control over AI-driven infrastructure actions.
Simplifying AI-Driven Infrastructure Development
The MCP server is also designed to make it easier for developers to build custom automation workflows.
By exposing the Nutanix platform's capabilities to AI coding assistants, developers can generate platform-ready scripts across languages and tools including Python, Go, Java, JavaScript, PowerShell, curl, REST, and JSON-compatible environments.
Developers can also configure security permissions and build custom AI agents capable of automating Nutanix infrastructure operations while maintaining governance.
This approach positions the MCP server as more than an AI assistant integration. It provides a tools layer through which enterprises can develop and govern their own agentic workflows.
Moving Toward Autonomous Cloud Management
The launch reflects a broader shift in enterprise infrastructure management, where AI is increasingly being used not only to analyze operational data but also to execute defined actions.
For enterprises operating large hybrid multicloud environments, the challenge is balancing that automation with security, authorization, auditability, and operational oversight.
Nutanix's MCP server addresses this by placing the Prism v4 API and its existing governance controls between AI agents and infrastructure operations.
As Thomas Cornely, Executive Vice President, Product Management at Nutanix, described the launch, the MCP server represents another step in the company's effort to simplify complex cloud operations through automation and enable customers to use autonomous AI agents with greater confidence.
Availability
The MCP server for Nutanix Cloud Platform is available as open-source software through the Nutanix developer platform. Customers can download it and connect it with their own AI agents and developer tools.
