NetApp introduces Keystone Sovereign to help European customers strengthen data sovereignty

Article content
NetApp has introduced NetApp Keystone Sovereign, a new Storage-as-a-Service offering designed to help qualified European customers address increasingly complex data sovereignty and compliance requirements.
The offering is aimed at organisations that need to keep data, support and operational activities within defined geographic boundaries, particularly as regulated industries adopt cloud-like infrastructure and consumption models.
The initial pilots will be available in Germany and France, with additional European countries planned.
Data sovereignty moves beyond residency
For organisations operating in regulated markets, data sovereignty is increasingly extending beyond the question of where information is physically stored.
Requirements can also cover who can access systems, where support is delivered, how telemetry is handled and how data moves between environments.
NetApp says Keystone Sovereign is designed to address these broader requirements by providing additional controls around regional operations, support, access and data handling.
Regional controls for European customers
Keystone Sovereign is designed to help qualified European customers keep relevant data and operational activities within specified geographic boundaries.
The capabilities include European-based data residency for relevant customer data, logs, backups and telemetry where applicable, alongside European-based support and escalation paths.
The offering also includes European-controlled access and management processes, documentation covering telemetry, monitoring and data flows, and contractual and legal structures intended to reinforce sovereignty requirements.
Supporting regulated industries
The growing focus on sovereignty comes as organisations in regulated sectors continue to modernise their IT environments while facing increasingly specific regional compliance requirements.
For these organisations, cloud-like consumption models can provide flexibility and scalability, but they can also introduce questions around operational control and access.
Keystone Sovereign is positioned as an attempt to address those concerns while retaining the consumption-based model associated with Storage-as-a-Service.
From cloud flexibility to operational control
The development reflects a broader shift in how enterprises approach cloud and data infrastructure.
Data residency was traditionally focused on where information was stored. Increasingly, organisations also want greater visibility into who can access their environments, where support teams are located and how operational data and telemetry are handled.
That makes sovereignty a broader infrastructure and governance issue rather than simply a storage-location requirement.
Germany and France among initial markets
NetApp plans to make initial Keystone Sovereign pilots available in Germany and France, with additional countries expected to follow.
The phased approach allows the company to expand the offering across European markets where sovereignty and regulatory requirements can vary by jurisdiction and industry.
For customers, the ability to define regional boundaries around data, support and operational access could become increasingly important as organisations seek to balance modern infrastructure models with local compliance expectations.
Building trust around Storage-as-a-Service
The move comes as enterprises increasingly look for infrastructure that combines the flexibility of cloud consumption with greater control over where data and operational activities reside.
NetApp says Keystone Sovereign is intended to help qualified European customers address those expectations while continuing to use a Storage-as-a-Service model.
As data sovereignty becomes a more strategic consideration for enterprises, infrastructure providers will increasingly need to demonstrate not only where data is stored, but also how the surrounding operational environment is governed.
